FULL-TIME EARTH EDUCATOR (SCHOOL YEAR)
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Working on-site at overnight programs
  2. Office work involving these programs
At programs:
  • Teach 5th and 7th grade students in a science curriculum-based program outdoors
  • Manage behaviors in full-class as well as smaller groups
  • Mealtime duties
  • Evening activities
  • Special projects and light maintenance of the facility
  • Set-up and clean-up
In office:
  • Extensive learning material creation and maintenance
  • Maintenance of contact information and visuals of participants
  • Follow-through program visits
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION AND ANTICIPATED DATES:

Fifth grade program (Sunship EarthTM) is a residential (overnight) program. Staff is required to stay on-site for the full five days/four nights. Programs run Friday through Tuesday. Program site is T.R.E.E.'s Outdoor Classroom in Covington, Louisiana. Eight to twelve sessions are anticipated between September 2008 and May 2009.

Seventh grade program (SUNSHIP IIITM) is a residential (overnight) program. Staff is required to stay on-site for the full three day/two nights. Programs conducted at T.R.E.E.'s Outdoor Classroom in Covington, Louisiana. Six to nine sessions are anticipated during January and February, 2009.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • Strong commitment to children and learning
  • Experience with children
  • Able to work in outdoor environments (all of weather conditions)
  • Flexible schedule
  • Performance/acting skills a plus
SALARIES AND BENEFITS:
  • Full-time salary is $28,000 (Sept.- June)
  • Health Benefit plan available
  • The opportunity to teach in an informal setting at a 1 to 3 ratio of adults to kids
  • The chance to learn from and become proficient with an innovative and effective model for teaching and managing kids
  • Learning the dynamics of community building among staff and participants at programs
  • Sharing your enjoyment of the out-of-doors with others
  • Working with a team of dedicated earth educators
  • Interacting with students and adults from diverse backgrounds
  • Red Cross CPR and 1st Aid Training

SUNSHIP III - $650.00 per three day/two night session for all sessions

  • Learning the dynamics of community building among staff and participants at programs

  • Teach 4th grade students in a science curriculum-based program outdoors
  • Manage behaviors in full-class as well as smaller groups
  • Mealtime duties
  • Special projects and light maintenance of the facility
  • Set-up and clean-up
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION AND ANTICIPATED DATES:
  • Programs scheduled during the 2008-2009 school year (anticipate October through March).
  • Fourth grade program (EarthkeepersTM) is three days/zero nights at Jean Lafitte National Historic Park and Preserve on the West Bank.
  • Approximately 18 sessions anticipated for 2008-2009 school year.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • Strong commitment to children and learning
  • Experience with children
  • Able to work in outdoor environments (variety of weather conditions)
  • Flexible schedule
  • Performance/acting skills a plus
SALARY AND BENEFITS:

Salary is paid on a per program basis and increases cumulatively by number of programs worked.

EarthkeepersTM (4th grade program) begins at $225 per 3-day program.
