Earthkeeper Training

Winter is the season for Earthkeeper training at the Barataria Preserve of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve. At the preserve's Environmental Education Center, the nationally acclaimed Earthkeeper program encourages children to become environmentally aware citizens by taking them on a three-day adventure in the preserve woods.

Earthkeepers-in-training are fourth grade students who work with teachers and parents to unlock the treasurers of the natural world as they explore with E.M., the wizard of the woods. E.M. helps the trainees understand ecological systems and develop an appreciation for nature. Through this fun, participatory, curriculum based program, students are immersed in science concepts like energy flow, cycles, and interrelationships.

Earthkeepers is a program developed by the Institute for Earth Education and is conducted through a partnership with T.R.E.E. (Teaching Responsible Earth Education) and the National Park Service. For more information, contact T.R.E.E staff at 504-895-2772 or visit their website at www.treetalk.org.
